Our clients had a love hate relationship with their Victorian terrace but everyday life was squeezed into a tired, cramped kitchen at the back of the house. The main rooms and the newly extended garden felt like two separate worlds, with no real heart to the home and very little connection between inside and out.
Our approach – more space, same spirit
The extension is deliberately modest and subordinate to the original house, no deeper than the outhouse and stepped off the southern boundary to reduce mass and protect the neighbours’ outlook. Inside, we have maximised the floor area to create a single open plan living space that has honed areas while remaining flexible.
“Working with Built Together on our Victorian kitchen extension has been incredible. Always approachable and responsive, Myles continually goes the extra mile to ensure the project’s success.”

Design Approach
Materials, character and detail
The material palette is designed to feel like a respectful continuation of the terrace, not a pastiche. A tumbled red brick complements the original fabric, with subtle parapet and window detailing that nods to the Victorian front elevation while clearly reading as contemporary work. Stone heads and sills to the main garden-facing window reference the cast details on the street side, tying front and back together.
Living with the garden
Large, carefully positioned glazing pulls natural light deep into the centre of the home and frames views out to the extended garden. A deep picture window and seat create a quiet spot to read or watch the kids play, while slim-framed sliding doors open directly onto the terrace for outdoor eating in warmer months. Rooflights over the kitchen and dining zone bring in high-level daylight and animate the space through changing shadows over the course of the day.
Thinking about extending a period home?
Chestnut Walk shows how a modest, carefully considered extension can unlock the full potential of a historic terraced house, keeping its character, improving its performance and making everyday life simpler and more enjoyable.
